Flower arranging

I really wanted to participate in Tinkerlab's latest Creative Challenge. The material is flowers and Cakey loves flowers. The activity is meant to be child-centered, child-directed and/or process oriented. Hmmm, what to do? As it is winter here, there is not a single flower in the garden. So yesterday the kids and I visited the florist and came away with two lovely bunches of long stemmed flowers.

It was late in the day so I kept the activity simple – flower arranging. Cakey often picks flowers from the garden and pops them into a vase but this is the first time she has been given long stemmed flowers and short vases to fill. I set up a collection of jars and cups (vases), scissors to cut the flowers and a jug of water. Then I stood back and let her get to work. Interestingly, she measured the stems against the vases and cut them to fit. I did not expect that. The only time I had to intervene was to bring over a cloth to clean up one spill.

Cakey was extremely happy with her flower arrangements and distributed the vases around the house. It was a lovely activity, one that we will do again.

If this is your first visit to at home with Ali – welcome. If you like it, you can follow along through our facebook page or subscribe via email or RSS. Cheers Ali

  1. I can imagine that witnessing Cakey's stem-cutting was a cool experience. Often I'm amazing by the things my kids know all on their own. Thanks so much for joining the Creative Challenge, despite your lack of flowers -- you made it work!
